Chiang Rai Private Driver — Hire a Car and Driver for the Day

Chiang Rai’s best sights are spread out — the White Temple sits south of town, whilst the Golden Triangle, Doi Tung and Mae Sai are an hour or more to the north. Public transport between them is patchy, so a private car with a local driver is the easiest way to see what you want, in the order you want, without watching the clock.

Quick answer: our Full-Day Private Driver costs 3,000 THB per sedan (up to 3 guests) or 5,000 THB per van (up to 9 guests). That covers 08:00–18:00 plus one free extra hour until 19:00, anywhere in Chiang Rai province, with fuel, tolls and parking included. You pay the driver on the day.

Price and what is included

Vehicle Seats Full day (08:00–19:00)
Sedan Up to 3 guests 3,000 THB per car
Van Up to 9 guests 5,000 THB per van

Priced per vehicle, not per person — so a family of four in a van pays the same as a group of nine.

Included Private air-conditioned vehicle and driver (basic English), fuel, tolls and parking, hotel pickup and drop-off in Chiang Rai city, bottled water
Not included Entrance tickets (pay at each site), meals, tips
Optional English-speaking guide, +1,500 THB per day
Extra time 300 THB per hour after 19:00
Cancellation Free if you cancel more than 24 hours before pickup

Plan your own route

Send us the places you’d like to see and we’ll suggest the best order for free — it’s the part most visitors find hardest, as the main sights sit in opposite directions from town. A few popular combinations:

Temples and art, close to town

The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), the Black House (Baan Dam) and the giant Guan Yin at Wat Huay Pla Kang. All within easy reach of the city, which leaves time for a long lunch or a café stop. Our White Temple guide has the details.

The far north: Golden Triangle and the border

Doi Tung and the Mae Fah Luang Garden, the Mae Sai border town, the Golden Triangle viewpoint where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, the Opium House and the old city of Chiang Saen. A long but rewarding day — this is where a private car earns its keep.

Tea and mountains

Choui Fong tea plantation and the hill village of Doi Mae Salong, known for its oolong tea and cool mountain air. Bring a light layer from November to February.

A bit of everything

The White and Blue Temples in the morning, a Long Neck Karen village and a tea plantation after lunch, then the Golden Triangle before heading home. Ten hours goes quickly, but it’s very doable.

Entrance tickets are paid at each site. See our Chiang Rai entrance fees page so you know how much cash to bring.

Sedan or van?

  • Sedan — best for couples and groups of up to 3 with normal luggage.
  • Van — for 4 to 9 guests, families with children, or anyone who wants room to stretch out on the longer northern routes.

Driver only, or driver and guide?

Our drivers know the roads and the sights well and speak basic English, so they’ll get you everywhere comfortably. If you’d like the stories behind each temple and village, add an English-speaking guide for 1,500 THB per day.

Several days, or a set route?

You can hire the driver for several days — from three days the vehicle price is 5% off each day. If you’d rather not plan anything, we also run seven set half-day and full-day routes.

Prefer to share and save?

Travelling solo or as a couple on a budget? Our shared Chiang Rai 7 Highlights day tour covers the seven best-known sights for 1,200 THB per person with a guide and lunch, in a small group of up to 9.
